Renewable Energy Production Subsidy

The Renewable Energy Production Subsidy is part of the Government of Western Australia's commitment to develop the State's renewable energy resources through its electricity reform program. The $6 million support package was announced as part of the Government's A New Deal for Sustainable Energy.

The Renewable Energy Production Subsidy is designed to assist renewable energy generators connected to the South West electricity grid, by providing a short-term subsidy during the period in which the Government's electricity reforms become effective.

A phased approach has been taken.

  • Stage 1 is for power stations commissioned between 1 November 2003 and 31 December 2005
  • Stage 2 is for power stations commissioned between 1 January 2006 and 30 June 2007
  • Stage 3 is for power stations commissioned prior to 1 January 1997
All three stages have now closed for new applicants.

Payments to some generators for their renewable energy production are scheduled to continue until the end of 2009, with other generators receiving final payments from the program in 2007 or 2008. In the 2006/07 financial year the Renewable Energy Production Subsidy subsidised the generation of 186 GWh of renewable energy from wind, biomass and hydro sources.
