Funding and Grants

Funding was committed to the following projects through the March 2008 funding round.

Busselton-Dunsborough Environment Centre
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Graeme Attey
Halcyon Resources
Millennium Kids Inc.
National Electrical and Communications Association of Western Australia
Southern Metropolitan Regional Council

Busselton-Dunsborough Environment Centre:
Renewable Energy Trailer

The ‘Above Water’ subcommittee of the Busselton-Dunsborough Environment Centre will construct a renewable energy trailer to raise awareness about energy and water conservation, renewable energy, alternative transport technology and climate change. The trailer will generate electricity using renewable energy, but will mainly be used for promotional purposes at a range of public events – e.g. rural shows, concerts, festivals, trade events, fairs, school events and community workshops. The trailer will incorporate solar panels, a wind turbine, a solar water pump and a model of a sustainable home. Brochures, posters and other information will also be available as part of the display.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder:
Bulbs for Change

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will offer a range of energy-saving opportunities to local residents as part of its ‘Bulbs for Change’ project. Two free community workshops will be held to provide householders with practical information and tools to help save energy. Participants will receive free energy saving globes and an energy self assessment booklet. Free walk-through home energy audits will be available to 50 households, with energy saving globes installed by energy experts to help achieve immediate savings. Local residents will also be able to hire a do-it-yourself home energy audit kit from the local library.

Graeme Attey :
WINDPODS

Graeme Attey will complete the final stage of research and development of a modular axis wind turbine system, called WINDPODS. WINDPODS is a small scale wind turbine system for urban areas, principally for use on household rooves. The first stage of WINDPODS involved the development of a full size prototype turbine with operating generator. The next stage will involve transforming the prototype into a design that can be manufactured. Specifically, it will include the construction of pre-production trial prototypes for in-field performance and reliability trials. It will also include research and development of electronics and inverter systems to suit the modular system. The results of testing and trials will result in a final product design that will form the basis for manufacturing and mass-production of the technology.

Halcyon Resources:
WaveEnergyBuoy Prototype

Halcyon Resources will fabricate, install and test a WaveEnergyBuoy off the coast of Western Australia. The project will aim to prove the concept's reliable operation and practical installation methodology, as well as collect experimental energy production data to validate and refine numerical wave-to-wire models. The information will be used to develop future commercial systems. The principal outcomes of the project will be 'in-water' proof that the WaveEnergyBuoy device can produce energy reliably and has the potential to be commercially implemented. The system is expected to have the ability to generate electricity or potable water via reverse osmosis.

Millennium Kids Inc.:
The Big Switch Experiment

The Big Switch Experiment will offer high school students across ten regional and metropolitan areas the opportunity to partner with adults to become better informed about greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable energy use. The project involves around 300 Year 10 students being trained as Climate Change Messengers. Following the training, students will commit to a number of climate change-related activities which will count as credits towards their community service requirements under the Western Australian Certificate of Education. The proposed climate change activities include:

  • Presentations to primary school students, with take home action plans
  • Public presentations
  • Household energy audits
  • Surveys
  • Advertising and communication of messages.

National Electrical and Communications Association of Western Australia:
EcoSmart Electricians

The National Electrical and Communications Association of Western Australia will offer the ‘EcoSmart Electricians’ training course to licensed electricians in selected regional areas of Western Australia during 2009. The training course, which was piloted in the Perth metropolitan area in 2008, is designed to familiarise electricians with the latest energy efficient products, technologies and installation issues, as well as regulatory requirements relating to energy efficiency. Electricians who successfully complete the training course will be recognized and granted Energy Efficiency Certification and will qualify for accreditation under the program.

Southern Metropolitan Regional Council:
Fostering Sustainable Energy Practices

The Southern Metropolitan Regional Council will assist around 750 households that have indicated an interest in learning more about saving energy and increasing their use of sustainable energy products. The households will identify their preferred energy savings actions and be given the opportunity to participate in walk-through home energy audits. The three households who achieve the highest energy savings by the end of the project will be awarded vouchers to buy sustainable energy products.
