SEDO Grants Program

The Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO) Grants Program provides grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 for community-based sustainable energy projects.

Grants are awarded to projects that best meet the objectives of the program, which are:

  • raising community awareness of ways to reduce energy use and increase the use of renewable energy;
  • helping householders to reduce fossil fuel energy use; and
  • reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions in Western Australia.

The information provided below is an overview of the program and should be used as a guide only. Full program requirements are set out in the Community Project Guidelines, which are included as part of the Community Project Application Kit (see below).

Key project requirements

  • Projects should primarily target WA householders.
  • Projects must involve at least one of the following activites:
    • initiatives that assist householders to increase their use of sustainable energy products at home;
    • initiatives that encourage behavioural change to adopt sustainable energy practices at home, such as workshops and other education programs;
    • public awareness raising activities, such as information dissemination, demonstration projects and public displays;
    • home energy audits; or
    • other innovative activities that encourage sustainable energy use in the community.
  • Projects must primarily relate to stationery energy.
  • Projects must reduce greenhouse gas emissions or have a strong potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Who can apply?

  • Incorporated, not for profit organisations.
  • Local government organisations (Note - grants will not be provided for activities that government organisations typically carry out as part of their normal operations).
  • Universities or registered training organisations.
Applicants must be based in Western Australia or have an office in Western Australia.  Individuals are not eligible to apply.

Grants available

Grants are available to help meet the actual or cash costs of implementing projects.  These costs may include staff salaries, payments to consultants or contractors and the costs of equipment used in projects.

Grants are available for meeting the costs of implementing eligible, sustainable energy activities.  Projects can involve non-sustainable energy activities, such as reducing waste or water use, but the SEDO Grants Program does not provide grants for these purposes.

SEDO encourages applicants to contribute cash funding and in-kind support to projects.

Grants will typically NOT be provided for renewable energy or energy efficiency installations (such as solar photovoltaic panels, solar hot water systems or insulation) which are already eligible for funding under other Government programs (e.g. WA Solar Schools Program, Energy Efficient Homes Package, National Solar Schools Program, etc) or which are eligible for the Australian Government’s Solar Credits Scheme.
