INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT - DOMESTIC Renewable Energy Action Agenda The following initiatives are part of the Commonwealth Government's Renewable Energy Action Agenda which was developed in consultation with industry and launched in June 2000. The Action Agenda sets a vision for the growth of a commercially viable and internationally competitive Australian industry aiming to achieve annual sales of $4 billion by 2010. Mandatory Renewable Energy Target and Renewable Energy Certificates The Commonwealth Government's mandatory renewable energy target requires the generation of 9,500 gigawatt hours of extra renewable electricity per year by 2010. The Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator is responsible for overseeing implementation of the measure and has a number of responsibilities including overseeing the creation of renewable energy certificates. Renewable energy certificates are used to be demonstrate compliance with the mandatory renewable energy target with liable parties required to surrender them to the Office of Renewable Energy Regulator on an annual basis. A Green Electricity Market has been established by industry to facilitate trading of renewable energy certificates. Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap The Renewable Energy Industry Implementation Group (comprising the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, the Australian Greenhouse Office, the Sustainable Energy Industry Association and the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Renewable Energy) is developing a Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap to assist in strategic decision making and resource allocation for future research and development and technology acquisition strategies. Industry Support Programs - Australian Greenhouse Office The Australian Greenhouse Office administers a range of support programs to encourage the development of the Australian renewable energy industry. These include the Renewable Energy Commercialisation Program and the Renewable Energy Equity Fund. CADDET Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy The Centre for the Analysis and Dissemination of Demonstrated Energy Technologies (CADDET) Energy Efficiency website is a unique source of global information on proven, commercial applications covering the full range of energy-saving technologies. CADDET provides an international information network to help managers, engineers, architects and researchers find out about sustainable techniques that have worked in a variety of countries. CADDET Energy Efficiency provides information and case studies on new, cost-effective, energy-saving technologies that have been demonstrated in applications in industry, buildings, transport, utilities, and agriculture. CADDET Renewable Energy provides information and case studies on a range of commercial renewable energy technologies, including biomass, geothermal, waste, hydro, solar, wind and photovoltaics. << Back to Links |
